He is the cutest. He was born on Jan. 4. I was able to take part of an important rite of passage along with Jeff J. When I visited in the hospital. I don't know what it is- but these guys produce the sweetest most endeering handsome babies! Mothering has really brought an amazing dimension to Elizabeth. She is so good at it! When you get to know Owen and Lukas you will see what I mean!

Also- on a much lighter note-- I got to see U2 in Cleveland with Uncle Chet and cousen Jordan. Words won't do justice.

And Nancy Kohn tagged me, so hear it goes:

my five guilty pleasures
(not exhaustive)

1) Comic Books-- My FAVORITE for of entertainment. I have been reading/collecting since 1978, and currently have over 10,000 issues in my basement. (favorites, Spider-Man, Justice Soiciety, Flash, anything SIlver Age)

2) Doctor Who- The a cult BBC sci-fi series that has aired since the day Kennedy was shot and CS lewis died. I was part of a fan club in the 80's- went to DR. Who Conventions (thanks Dad) and had a 20 foot long scarf knitted by my Mom (just like TOm Baker, the fourth actor to portray the Doctor) The current series produced by Russell Davies is genius!

3) Bathing: I love loong scalding baths in my clawfoot with smelly bath salts. Somedays I take two baths!

4) Karaoke: I do a great George Michael as well as Eminem, with a bit of A-Ha as well.

5) I am a Brian WIlson/Beach Boys fanatic. I have copies of every recording session and rehearsal during their time at Capital. As well all the smile fragments. My dad started me on this!
<img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/7247631-113659505217347490?l=jeffcannell.blogspot.com' Silence- (actually I'm listening to Ian breathe while he sleeps, I'm blogging at his bedside)
watchingFirefly thanks to Andy Taylor

praying with the kids

As I was tucking Ian to bed, I asked him what he wanted to pray about. It doesn't seem to be getting better- and human nature seems to be runniing true to form.

It seems to be a rare occurance that tragedy of this sort affects the US. In the days-months that follow I see this tragedy in all likleyhood being reduced to a political debate among the cbs/abc/nbc/fox/cnn/talk-radio/internet-pundit community.

As a alternative I want to ask you guys to seriously consider engaging suffering initially with your prayers and pocketbooks. Perhaps other opportunities will emerge- but initially this is a way we can move in the rythme of Jesus' Love.

Here is what I've found so far:
With the massive amount of clean up that will be undertaken in the coming weeks, World Relief volunteers will need chainsaws, containers to haul away debris, tools, and other necessary items. Donors wishing to contribute to the Hurricane Relief fund may do so at World Relief ;or by calling 1-800-535-5433.

To support the hurricane relief work of Samaritan's Purse, call (800) 665-2843 or visit www.samaritanspurse.org.

For information on ways to assist The Salvation Army in meeting the needs of the victims of Katrina, people may call 1-800-SALARMY or visit </notag> <notag face="Arial, Helvetica" size="3">www.salvationarmyusa.org</notag><notag face="Arial, Helvetica" size="3">.

</notag><notag face="Arial, Helvetica" size="3">You can take part in Operation Blessing's ongoing hurricane response efforts by making an online donation at to support OBI relief services in the field

Monday Monday

Monday
Kids First Da Of School
Ian- 1st Grade
Kathleen- Kindergarten

Cel Phone: OFF
Home Phone: UNPLUGGED
SABBATH, CELEBRATION, BOWLING

ohh ohh ohhhhhh my Adrienne!

Adrienne and I celebrated her 29th Birthday last night. Adrienne is remarkable. The energy, passion, commitment, and authenticity that soaks her life energies me on good days, and sometimes infuriates me when I'm being an ass. I could not have married anyone else. It is hard for me to remember life without her. It seems so bleak in comparison.

I love seeing her vibe with other people. She has this gravity, this magnetism around her that is mystical in nature. I bleieve it is the Holy Spirit in her life. She is so much fun to be with. Like me- she easily speaks her mind- which is a blessing, but sometime pisses people off. But at least you always know who you are talking to.

She also get's hotter every day. How did a dork like me land a babe like Adrienne?

sidenotes:
-spent the weekend with the Neds-Fox family. These guys are two of the most insightful people I have ever known. Both of them of the best piercing question-askers and listeners that I or Adrienne know. I just hit me yesterday that God has granted them supernatural insight interwoven with a large dose of humility. I find myself pondering things they have said long after they have gone. Josh and I had an impromptu sing along jamboree on the front porch- even attracting another neighbor.
We sang: Nowhere Man, The Scientist, The End of the World as We Know It, Old Mother Reagan, Broken Wings, Eye of the Tiger, among many other favorites.

-Listening to Dick Hyman on the Harpsichord playing pop hits of the 60's. HIs version of "The In Crowd" is stellar. Produced by Enoch Light.

-Gas prices are up- and my scooter barely notices. So there Andy Fruechtnicht.

Flight of the Rambling Track for God's Sake while Razing the Bar!

First off- God bless you Andy Whitman , I was having a depressing day and needed some encouragment. God is good.

-Our baby church is one year old.

-Today i spent an hour or so lying on my back in the alleyway next to YMT coffee. Ray helped me move our old hide-a-bed to Sam & Annie's house, and I got car sick riding in the back- and almost had a full scale vertigo relapse. I couldn't move- spent a lot of time throwing up. Whilst This was happening I'm covered in sweat and a number people walked by and presumably saw me looking like I was passed out in an alleyway. Probably thought I was homeless. Perhaps they'll visit the Church someday. Messy Church --> messy pastor. Adrienne dropped by with some medicine. An hour later Chris Kay (thankyouthankyouthankyou Chris for enduring my foul look, foul smell, and foul language) dropped by with his scooter and I felt stable enough to ride on the back of his vespa to the house. I went home and slept for a few hours. --I'm Such a wus.

-Kathleen's best friend, Lucy, gave her 12 cents as a gift. Kathleen pulled me aside yesterday and told me she had a bunch of money for the Asia's Hope orphanage. She gave me the money and told her how much Jesus loves Vanna, and the others in the orphanage.

-Brian Carlson has impregnated Erica Carlson! Woo Hoo! Our Church is becoming full o' babies! You're seed hath found purchase my friend!

-Went on a two hour walk with my friend Jimmy Wonser last night. My brother from a different mother! Let's tear stuff up!

-I'm loving my Tatoo courtesy of Kat, The Artful Dodger

<br
Kathleen designed it!

-I'm feeling much joy, but I am perplexed about many things right now.

-I have been really enjoying hanging out with Ron VanHorn and Rob Ramey of Spacial Concepts as they build an apartment- entertainment room in our basement. These guys have been really encouraging me and Adrienne in our marriage and with church related stuff. These guys are veteran church planters and youth leaders. Rob's Youth Group was the birthplace of House of Heroes, among lotsa other cool stuff.

-Jeremy and MPG have entered into the scooter fray, here is hoping that Jared and Moishe can join soon as well. We discussed differing appraches to the Bible- and the a-priori assumptions people bring to the text. Very lively discussion indeed. I am truly grateful for opportunities to have non-hostile dialogue on these topics.

After a couple of meetings I ran a couple of errands and almost died. (I was riding my vespa)

The light turned green and I paused a second. THe next moment two red pick-up trucks ran the light. I would have died for sure. I was shocked-- but my shock turned to rage. But then I realized what a blessing it was not to get killed. All stuff of great import, etc- but tuff nonetheless. I eventually was able to steal out with the kids to go fishing. We used wheatie balls with vanilla extract just like Rev. Jim suggested- but we caught no fish. We were fishing the olenscrungy. Ian informed me that it would have been much smarter to go fishing at Grandpa Steve and Grandma Manu's because we had caught 10 fish there last week. My attempts to explain the thrill of fishing the Olentangy vs. the Suburban Stocked pond fell on deaf ears. We capped of the day with some amazing ice-cream at Denise's.

Thanks to ken Epstein at Evil Empire Records I had two free passes for a pre-showing of Batman Begins. I had almost no expectations for this flick- But I was completely blown away.

This will definitly be the movie of the Summer. It completely makes up for all the previous for piece-of-crap Batman films. THis more than made up for the dreadful Revenge of the Sith.

I ran into all my buddies from the Laughing Ogre as well- and by chance ran into Josh (SSS) and Kat (Artful Dodger) with Josh's Mom going to see another film. Picked up some Gregorian Chant albums for 25 cents. (Listening Now)

had a great time hanging with Rob Ramey today. Also spent some time with Jovan and Annie at "Yeah Me Too!" Coffee. jovan described recent bizzare occurences at his shop. The most recent instance was an older couple listening to John McCollum belt out imprompto blues songs in between one liners, while Tim Easton Sat on the floor trying to tune the guitar brought in by the women who was entranced by John's ability. If you go ask about Kathleen's art on display.

I've got the teaching prep blues right now- tommorrow we are talking about fasting, not a topic I have been nearly as aquainted with as I would like to be. So here it goes, bear with the spelling/grammatical errors, lack of cohesive strucvcture etc.

That said...

I write this after spending some time with Dave Webster, now I sit in my office on this sunny day listening to an LP of THe Ventures "Where the Action Is"

I have spent virtually the first hour of everymorning at "Yeah Me To" coffee chatting with Jovan and the people in my neighborhood. I have had the privilige of making all sorts of new friends in the neighborhood. I've got so much on my plate, but I do believe I have been able to do so without succumbing to busyness. I've got enough time to do what I am supposed to be doing without selling out to demon business.

The AVC conference was spectacular- Made lotsa new acquaintences. I hopefully will post some stuff related to it.

Ian and I are now scooter buddies. Inspired by Kat and Sid's Mother son scooter combo, I decieded to start going rides with Ian after work (we primarily stick to sleepy side streets.) It is amazing how much Ian will talk to me when we go on these adventures. I will try to get a picture up of us on our ride.

Kathleen is producing some truly amazing artwork as well as trying to play the guitar. I hope to soon begin posting the fruit of her labour's. She is distilled sunshine, and has about as many friends in Clintonville as I have been blessed with.

FAVORITE ALBUMS OF RIGHT NOW:
Enoch Light: Big Band Bossa Nova
The Ventures: Million Dollar Weekend
Johnny Cash: Greatest Hits Volume 1
The Free Design: Kites Are Fun
House of Heroes
Best of Question Mark and the Mysterians (German "import")

Adrienne and I have really been stretched as of late, and It is amazing to see all that God is doing in my wife. I've been at Christ Our King Church for 26 years. All William Falkner knew was two or three square miles of Missippi, and I guess that's what I want to do. I want to know two or three square miles of Christ Our King, just know it and keep knowing it."

-Eugene Peterson: The Contemplative Pastor
not an entire summation, but it is much of what I feel about Clintonville.

Probably the Best Blog Post I Have Read . . .

Thank You Andy Whitman.

prayer vigil pt. 2

Ian and Kathleen dropped by for their shift at the prayer vigil. Ian and Kathleen sat down and watched a powerpoint about Asia’s Hope so they could pray for the kids. Kathleen, inspired by the show started working on a big drawing about how Jesus loves Cambodia. Ian and I went to my office to pray while we looked at the maps he made at St. Joseph.

Here were a couple of his prayers:

“Jesus- I wanna pray for all the people in Africa that you would make them un poor.”

“I pay that all the children in Asia would have a great home and have houses in Jesus name I pray amen. “

We then prayed for the poor in mexico.

And then Ian took me aside and whispered this in my ear.
Some people at my old school spoke mexicoish.

wow

24 hour Prayer Vigil pt. 1

Almost 4 hours into the 24 hour Prayer Vigil. We kciked it off with a blistering set of passionate worship songs--guitar-Djimbe, and 30 voices for over an hour, crammed into the front lobbey of Elementville (above cornerstone bakery, across form Rag_o_Rama.) Following the worship- Posters in the Lobbey contained phrases from the Jesus Prayer. People could work around the circle writing out prayers and petitions, and then make another round praying for others. In the Corner Conference Room, dozens of candles burned as several composed poems or letters as a prayer to God, while some played the glass harmonics (thank-you Paul Robinson!) Refreshments ranging from vegetables to pop tarts adorned the break-room- With lots french press coffee courtesy of "Yeah Me Too Coffee Shop."

In the theatre room-- A series of prayers ranging from Psalms, selections from the Book of Common Prayer, Celtic Daily Prayer, etc- rotate while people sit and meditate on the words speaking to God.

Letters are beginning to be posted on the walls- and I am finding myself re-reading the prayers- as I think of new things to add. Every time I go to the confession wall- something new comes up.

Andy was at his laptop- typing a prayer to Jesus for 45 minutes. it was effortless, but according to Andy-- the longest he had ever prayed. I hope this time can be a time of discovery for many to find new ways they can connect with God.

We have people coming in throughout the next 20 hours-- But we would love for you to join us. I have had IBS since beginning the Church Plant, and now I feel a whole lot better. Also went down from 3 cokes a day to 3 a week, and have a spinache salad at least once a day.

-When I put the kids to bed I read BIble stories to them from The NIV Children's Bible- AWESOME illustrations. No white-boy Jesus in this book- IN fact hardly any anglo-looking people. Much more middle-eastern- but anyway, I try to only read one story a night- and discuss it with the Kids. We read the account of Jesus being captured in the Garden of Gethsemane. We were talking about how scary it must have been, and Ian commented, "Daddy, that's just like when the creatures captured Aslan the Lion, and they cut his main, and killed him on the Stone Table."

Wow.-- I think they are getting it.

So we have just started reading the Chronicles of Narnia as well. The chapters are not too long to read aloud, and their is a lot of good conversation fodder in the books to talk with Ian and Kathleen about.

-I'm cautiously excited with what's going down in my church community. John and Kori are starting a new, kid friendly Friday Night home group at 559 Northridge. If you are interested e-mail him at john(at)elementville(dot)com. Chelsea is also starting an Alpha group.

I am especially excited about our upcoming 24 hour prayer vigil, held at Element (right above cornerstone bakery, across from Rag_o_Rama. The vigil will be held on March 11th & 12th between 7:00PM Friday Night to 7:00PM Saturday Night. FInger Food and Coffee Will Be Provided. Drop in traffic is welcomed. I hope this is just merely the first of many such events.

You don't have to be affiliated with Central Vineyard to join us.

Be seeing You,

Jeff

Worth Reflecting on . . .

My faith journey kind of looks like this (so far): faith with youthful zeal and idealism (with confidence and a smile with little room with fear and trembling) -- wounded bitter cynical days -- the SLOW gradual re-emergence of hope, but a limping hope, trying to find out how joy, zeal, hope, fear and and trembling can integrate together in a life drenched with God. Cynicism dies a long death, and learning to take risks again despite fear of screwing it up. Being vulnerable when you are guaranteed to be hurt- and still letting yourself be vulnerable. I don't know- the last several years have been ones of gradually feeling alive and more alive. Hope with eyes wide open. Depression and Joy rooming together in the same household- but with joy gradually taking up more square footage.
Well- I like what Steve Taylor had to write:

The Finish Line

Once upon an average morn
An average boy was born for the second time
Prone upon the altar there
He whispered up a prayer he'd kept hid inside
The vision came, he saw the odds
A hundred little gods on a gilded wheel
"These will vie to take your place
But, Father, by Your grace I will never kneel"

And I saw you, upright and proud
And I saw you wave to the crowd
And I saw you laughing out loud at the Philistines
And I saw you brush away rocks
And I saw you pull up your socks
And I saw you out on the blocks for the finish line

Darkness falls, the devil stirs
And as your vision blurs you start stumbling
The heart is weak, the will is gone
And every strong conviction comes tumbling down
Malice rains, the acid guile
Is sucking at your shoes while the mud is fresh
It floods the trail, it leaves you dry
As every little god buys its pound of flesh

And I saw you licking your wounds
And I saw you weave your cocoons
And I saw you changing your tunes for the party line
And I saw you welch on old debts
I saw you and your comrades bum cigarettes
And you hemmed and you hawed
And you hedged all your bets waiting for a sign

Let's all wash our hands as we throw little fits
Let's all wash our hands as we curse hypocrites
We're locked in the washroom turning old tricks
Deaf and joyless and full of it

The vision came, he saw the odds
A hundred little gods on a gilded wheel
"These have tried to take Your place
But, Father, by Your grace, I will never kneel
I will never kneel"

Off in the distance, bloodied but wise
As you squint with the light of the truth in your eyes
And I saw you, both hands were raised
And I saw your lips move in praise
And I saw you steady your gaze for the finish line
Every idol like dust, a word scattered them all
And I rose to my feet when you scaled the last wall
And I gasped when I saw you fall in His arms at the finish line

Written by Steve Taylor © 1993 Warner Alliance Music/Soylent Tunes ASCAP

Another Sermon Snippet!

I believe the Beatitudes in Matthew 5 are the lense that the whole of Jesus' teaching is built. I have been working through Jesus' strong teaching on not looking for an easy out from a marriage covenant. I was struck with the idea of applying the beatitudes to marriage and here is what I a came up with:

The Beattitudes of Marriage

1. Blessed ar those who know their marriage needs help because they will see God work.

2. Blessed are those who see what they have done to hurt their marriage- for God will encourage them.

3. Blessed are those who don’t always have to be “right” in an argument with their spouse, “ God has their back!

4. Blessed are those who have a vision for what their marriage could be, because a vision like that can come true!
Or... Blessed are those who always want to work on their marriages- for they will see change take place.

5. Blessed are those who forgive their spouse, because they will find forgiveness too!

6. Blessed are those who want God’s best for their spouse, for they will see God work.

7. Blessed are those who try to build common ground with their spouse instead of being easily offended. Because they will be workers of reconciliation just like God!

8. Blessed are those who continue to fight for there marriage even when friends and family are not supportive- Their allegiance is to God first, and to His way of doing life.

Make my life a prayer

I read this quote today while reading Red Moon Rising by Pete Greig. I cannot imagine isolating the concept of "being" a friend with someone and engaging in that friendship, hanging out, talking, helping each-other out.

Well anyway, Peter's first act at Pentecost, his first act upon receiving the holy spirit, was to preach the gospel. His first act was to actively, intentionally, throw open wide the gate and invite people into relationship with Jesus. But I suspect that Peter himself had a long way to go in the journey of being a child of God, being a subject of the Kingdom of God. In Galations 2 Paul writes about having to confront Peter about major issues with his ministry in his prefferential treatment of Jewish people in the congregation. Apparently Peter was still a work in progress, yet that did not stop him from working to intentionally spread the gospel. So I guess it's ok to not have your house completely tidy before you invite people in.

Radical Christianity

I would never categorize myself as 'radical' in my Christian Faith. I would not consider radical to be an insult, rather a compliment-- I just don't know if I'm ready to compare my way of working out my faith against everyone else in the Kingdom of God-- and allege that I am far mopre accomplished than them.

Jesus summarized the basic of following him this way: Luke 9: 23 “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me." This is not radical Christianity, this is normal Christianity. This is normal Christiainty. The word "daily" in this verse clearly communicates that this process is ongoing and progressive. So for one to categorize themself as radical and someone at an earlier stage in the journey is probably not too helpful. I really like Paul's attitude in Phillipians in using the phrase, "not that I have attained all this. . . "

This topic comes up after I hear of a well intentioned parent's concern for their child hanging around a couple of people in our church because they were too radical. Is there a point in our faith where we have enough of Jesus. Do you get to a point in a friendship or marriage where you do not want to become closer in your relationship-- if so, is that a good thing? Do you set "boundaries" in our relationship with Jesus, if so I have to ask, do you REALLY know Jesus. Do you really believe Jesus is Good. Do you really believe Jesus LOVES YOU! What are you afraid he is going to take from you?

I would not call pursuit of a vital and authentic relationship with Jesus. I would not call a desire to be the people of God radical. This is the normal Christian Life.

Weird Reunions . . .

Reunion 1: A month ago I was kinda reviewing my life as I went through some old pictures. I was not the type of guy who had a lot of frineds growing up, especially in elementary and middle school. On friend I had for a few years in middle school was TL. TL was a rarity at Burbank Elementary School for a few reasons. 1) his parents were divorced and he lived with his mom, (rare in the 70's where I lived, and 2) he was friends with me. My friend TL was there in 2nd grade, moved away, and was back I think in fourth grade, where he went by a different first name. We'll anyway, TL moved away and I lost touch. Flash Forward 23 years later and I am wondering whatever happend to TL. While going thorugh old pictures I asked God to help me run into him. 1 week later Adrienne and I are at Little Brothers for a show and we are waiting in line with this newly married couple. We small talked a bit and they invited us to sit with them for a bit. Elissa and Drew where their names. I found out that not only did Drew and I used to work for the same company (UUNET), but Drew also gre up in UA. After proceeding further I found that we were the same age-- Further-- that we went to the same elementary school. I asked him his last name and found out it was TL going by a different first name! I was completely blown away. Anyway, we had a great time together reminiscing. He was pretty blown away about my extensive memories from 23 years ago. His mom lives around the corner from us, and we are all getting together in the near future. Pretty cool answer to prayer.

Reunion 2: While sharing the story with JMC we began remiscing about people we had lost track of from our high school (15 years ago). I think we were looking at a yearbook or something. I came across a guy that was a year ahead of me, and also a low man on the social totem pole such as myself. He was in a couple of study halls with me. The reason I remembered this guy is because he was always really kind to me. Reminiscing with JMC We both wondered if this person ever embraced Christianity. I asked God right there if he would halp me to run into my old friend. Yesterday Andy Taylor and I were having coffee at Cafe Appropos and I thought I caught a glimpse of this guy out of the corner of my eye. I jumped up, ran outside, and called his name. It was him. At first he had no clue who I was-- But we talked for a bit. Turns out he is pretty entrenched in the music scene playing in a few bands. Still a very good natured fellow. We made plans to hang out. This blew me away.

Reunion 3: 12 years ago I worked with Habitat for Humanity over the Summer helping disabled clients find opportunities to do non physical labor to earn "sweat equity" towards their house. One couple I grew very fond off were Ruth and James and their little Boy Sunny. Both Ruth and James suffered from severe health problems, not to mention they lived in a tenement that had a rotted out floor with roaches everywhere and no utilities. We were so exited to see them get a house. When I left back to college I tried staying in touch with them and sent several letters, but never received a reply. When I got back to Columbus I was never able to find them. Every few years I would think of them and pray that God would help me to f ind them again.

Today I had to go to Radio Shack to pay a friends Sprint Bill. I was supposed to meet my friends, but I went to the wrong Radio Shack. While there I saw a man sitting down, it looked just like James. I asked him his name and it was him. He said Sunny was behind me and I turned around and 10 year old Sunny was now 21 and big enough to wrap me into a pretzel. He was pretty excited to see me. He told me that He still remembers us going to COSI and running errands all around town for Habitat. I invited them to Church, and Sunny and I are getting together. Not an quick answer to prayer like the first 2, but amazing nontheless. Pretty cool eh?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jeffcannell.blogspot.com/2005/01/weird-reunions.html' title='Weird Reunions . . . Do you want to know the organizing principle that was foundational to Jesus’ understanding of God’s Law?

Well he tells us later on in this Gospel. If you jump forward to Matthew 22:34-40 we read this:
34b-40 “. . . the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Here Jesus is quoting From Deut 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18

The Pharisees Could Talk about why murder was bad for hours—But I suspect they would not have much to say about how they were learning to better love their neighbors. They could talk about how many steps you could take on the Sabbath, They could quote all the passages from the Torah, but could they echo David’s sentiment, “As the dear pants for the water, so my Soul longs for You.” I don’t think so. Love had left the building, in fact love was evicted, And the religious leaders of that day found themselves obsessed with rules that no longer made sense without the love.

In 1 Corinthians 13:2 Paul says, “If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.”

A lot of us could probably do well in theological and doctrinal debates- But do we love well. Have we rubbed shoulders with Jesus enough that we can fulfill the law because by his grace we are becoming more like Him. Where murder is never an option for us not merely because we have enough self-control and a grasp of consequences- but because we value people the way Jesus values people.
Hang out with Jesus and you will gradually and progressively love people like Jesus loves people. This is why prayer, solitude, meditation on scripture are so critical. You spend time with people you love. You become like the people you hang out with. Hang out with Jesus and you will become more like him. You will love like he loves. And the kingdom of God will spread like wildfire.

Drop It Like It's Hot (clean edit)

Ian and Kathleen Drop It Like It's Hot. Prior to party Adrienne and I had a real good time with Kathleen. So often I get to see Jesus reflected in my daughter. Her kindness and giving spirit are overwhelming at times. When she received money for her birthday, her first response was that she wanted to give it to Asia's Hope. After a number of opportunities to back out she insisted. I guess some of those Bible stories we read at night are beginning to stick! When she is older I hope we get to go over to Cambodia together. I was first introduced to the music of Petsounds by hearing my Dad sing "You Still Believe In Me" in the shower (He sounded good too!) On long trips down to Florida betwen fights with my sister we would sing the parts of "Heroes and Villains." A childhood drenched in the music of the Beatles and the Beach Boys gave me an eternal desire to Rock!

Since the early 80's I remember my dad regailing me with stories of the mythical "Smile" album that was never completed. In my late teen years I started frequenting record shows and campus record shops, buying whatever bootleg Smile material I could find. I loved bonding with my Dad listening to the snippets. This all culminated in the release of this album and being able to Road-trip with my Dad to see the smile concert in Cleveland. One more memory to add to my numerous treasured Father-Son Memories. It makes me wonder what kind of things Ian will look back on and treasure when he is older. BTW- The album rocks to. For more reasons than the music I cried the first time I listened to the complete work with my headphones on in my home office.

2. Arcade Fire: Funeral
My Old Taylor University buddy, Happy Jen Tefft, turned me on to this masterpiece. Shortly after acquiring the album I saw them in concert at little Brothers. Truly one of the best shows I have ever been to. The music has the driving aggression of the Pixies with the Quirky delivery of the Talking Heads, and the big all encompassing sound of Disintegration era Cure. The lyrics really make me pause. If you buy this album, make sure to play it LOUD.

3. Chutes to Narrow: The Shins
Thank you Jean Hickman for turning me on to this masterpiece. I cannot help but smile whenever I play this album. I feel pure joy when I listen to the instrumentation. This melds the best of modern rock and sixties pop. The analog warmth is a breath of fresh air.

4. Good times had by all. Baby Owen Jackson stole the show that evening with his bulky cuteness. Today we did our family shindig, and then had the Hickman tribe over. Adrienne has been working non-stop. I have tried to help with clean-up where I can- But I'm pretty slow.

One of my favorite parts of the day is watching how much little Kathleen wants to emulate mommy. My favorite example from today: Kathleen when asked where she wanted to celebrate her birthday: Not McDonalds (Thank God), not Chuck-E-Cheeses, but get this: Cap City Diner. No Playground, no video games, no cutsey theme menues. She knows it's one of Mommy's favorite restaurants, and she wants to be just like mom- so hence- Cap City! She is so darling. For her love = emulation. My hope is that this simplicity translates to her relationship with God. If only we could all keep it that simple.

My first home movie in over a year!

Kathleen's balet Recital

The Weather Outside is Frightful!

We have power! We live on the NE corner of Summit and Arcadia!

Merry Christmas
UPDATE had a large group of people for an imprompto Christmas party at my house. Thanks for the wine John. The kids watched movies and played video games while the adults played board games led by JMC. Sybill was the big winner this evening. John, Andy, and I each got to take trips our into the wilds of Clintonville to pick up stranded friends to join the festivities. I wish I had a more affective way to get the word out, but I was happy with the 30-40 people that came by. Lotsa good fun, good eating, and great conversation.

My take on all the snow: Christ wanted people to slow down for once in celebration of his birthday. Our goal was to throw a rockin party for the community to express the love of Jesus this Christmas season. The evening consisted of Michael Gallaugher and his band rockin out our favorite Christmas songs (but he left out George Michael's "Last Christmas" grrr) and the Jazzy Christmas standards performed by John McCollum and Fred Kohn (Blogs to the left). In addition to the music Kathy Kehlmeier coordinated the best Christmas munch spread I have ever seen. The women should be a professional caterer. Free pictures with Santa was back this year, enhanced by a professional camera set up (Thanks Jeremy Slagle) and a real photo printer. Kori and Co. did a great job putting together kids crafts. I was able to meet a lot of new faces in the community. I was very proud of how everyone in the church pulled out all stops to show hospitality through this party!

Ian has a new friend named Kala. She is 13 and carpools with us to St. Joes. The other day Ian asked Adrienne if it was OK to marry neighbors. He then asked if he could marry Kala! Ians first crush! I can't count how many of those I had before I met "THE ONE!" (Adrienne)

Kathleen and I have gotten into the monday morning routine of playing Candy Land at Cup O Joe in Clintonville. This week Caroline Wilkins, an old friend of the family and new attender at CV joined us. Kathleen was happy to make a new friend.

I have been working up my own "Rule of Life" aka "Jeff's Life practices" outlining my gameplan in the areas of prayer, study, marriage, parenting, finances, and hospitality. I've put a copy in my office on on my bedroom wall so Adrienne can help me with it.

Check out Arcade Fire, this band put on one of the best shows I've seen in years!

Life is a Bit Crazy- But here are some cool pics!

Ian and Owen!
Ian And Kathleen Decorate The Tree!
Many Random Photos from the past year or so, their might be a picture of you!

More blogging later!

Central Vineyard Movie Night!

Napoleon Dynamite at 7:00- Studio 35! Hopefully he will be able to leave the hospital tommorrow. My sister wrote some blog posts as to what has been going down with My Dad, so I link those here for those interested:

update 1
update 2
update 3

Please keep praying for my Dad, he's got a really rough 2 months ahead of him of post op recovery.

Adrienne had a scope done on her throat for her acid reflux. They had to put her under so she will be out of commission for the rest of the day. I hope that we can get some insight how to deal with this health issue. This has been such a pain for her. Today I'm pretty down. but I can't stop thinking of how blessed I am to have Adrienne in my life. I love the marriage God has given me. Adrienne is such a rock in a world drowning in drama. She keeps me hopeful, gives me perspective, and loves well! Her openess with me in all things good and bad is something I need to treasure more. I just love laughing with her. God knew what I needed when He brought her into my life. I'd be so lost without her.

One last prayer situation:

Please Pray for Josh Swearingen's Dad, he had a really bad stroke. Click here for more info.

It has been a crazy couple of weeks with many people in our fledgling Church Plant going through lots of tough trials. I really feel like most of us are in the enemies crosshairs at the moment. A lot of dreadful stuff has been hitting the fan for so many in there work, family, marriages, health, etc. Seems like a real battle is going on. I'm holding on to the following passage:

Ephesians 4:14-16 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Election Day! - Want some pizza?

(some cool stuff is brewing based on this weekend, but I need to get it firmed up b4 reporting)

Wow, the day we have been waiting for, the day we have been dreading, election day. I spent the first part of my hanging out with my Dad. He has Major heart surgery to replace his aorta. Please pray for him- his surgery is on Saturday.

After hanging with Dad I spent 3 hours in line to vote. It was a blast! I happen to vote at the my neighborhood middle school, the same middle school that hosts Central Vineyard's weekend worship service. As I looked around to all the filled seets I realized that these were precisely the people we planted this Church for. I ran into many from our Church Plant, as well as many neighborhood friends. Upon arriving I ordered 30 pizza's to feed those waiting and lines. (actually, I called John at Elementville, and had him coordinate the pizzas) I must have had 30 conversations in the three hours I waited. People seemed weirded out, but genuinely appreciative. It shocked many that we refused pizza donations. When the pizza-guy arrived people were cheering. (If we bought them White Castles it would have been voter intimidation) I estimate that 500 people were fed. Not quite the numebr that my boss specializes in -parties of 5000 or more, but hey, we're still apprentices. one of the poll workers said that he has worked elections at Crestview for 20 years, and has never seen crowds like this! Many seemed very interested in our Church and expressed interest in checking it out. I had a blast 'working the crowd'. My hope is that this little act of kindness might represent the kingdom of God moving forward just a bit in my neighborhood. If so, this election will go down as one with the fondest of memories no matter who wins. I'm not assured as to what direction America is going, but I know the Kingdom of God will Move Forward. I'm not entirely convinced that voting is going to radically change things, and I certainly no better than to put my hope in it- but I'm thankful I did not stay at home.

My Week in Review

Wednesday Andy and Kate Whitman shared there stories with our Home Group. I love these guys! Kate radiates Jesus' love and Andy's thoughtfullness and authenticity give great weight and authority to his words, both spoken and written. Andy will be a speaker at the Festival of Faith and Music at Calvin College (Bruce Cockburn, Bill Mallonee, and others will be there as well. After group went to Houndogs to hang with Andy and Amanda Anderson and Brian Carlson. Good times indeed!

Wow, Thursday was pretty crazy. I needed to get signatures from Bill Christensen and Danny Meyer for some legal paperwork related to the Church. Met Bill at MCL to touch base with him. Every time I interact with this guy I leave encouraged. Stopped by VCC, the "BIG" Vineyard. Hob-Nobbed with Bob Crawford. Hung out with Dan the man Franz, who will be preaching at CV on the first Sunday in November. (Do Not Miss This!) Saw Webbie, and caught a quick conversation with Rich and Marlene. In two minutes Rich gave me immense help in putting together my Sermon on the Mount (AKA the Jesus Manifesto) series. VCC was the best church I could have been at the past ten years, and virtually EVERYTHING good in my life, either directly, or inderectly is related to the ministry of VCC, my favorite MEGA-Church! We are blessed to have them as our parent church!

After some more hob-nobbing, I took the vespa all the way up to Sunbury to get signatures from Danny. Their in the process of building a meeting place for their church right now. They are going for a lodge/front porch of the cracker barrell feel! This would be a perfect venue for a Church that excells at welcoming like this Church. I feel like I learn how to be a better pastor every time I interact with Danny.

It was quite a thrill going 65 on my Vespa on the way up to Sunbury. I have noticed that I get "gay-bashed" a lot less frequently when John McCollum is not a passenger on the rear of my scoot.

Today I had breakfast courtesy of Tree of Life School with Emily Kehlmeier, the best darn projectionist in the Universe! (Not to mention an awesome babysitter with GREAT taste in music. Rumor has it she is an accomplished drummer!)

Had coffee then with a dear friend who has made 14 days sobriety off crack and alcohol, and pot) Buddy, if you read this, I'm proud of your courage! God has been showing you some pretty amazing stuff!

My dear friend Nikki P is dropping by for some Coffee. Nicki was formerly known as Chief Seattle, master of all things related to the Grunge scene of the early 90's. Her dad cut my hair when I was a toddler, and her sister introduced me to my wife.

My wife Adrienne Rocks! (I owe an eternal debt of gratitude to this family!)

My Thoughts While Driving Back From Indy!

Following Jesus means to fully and routinely embrace solitude and community. Unfortunately, the way our culture is leaning, most people experience neither. We never truly enjoy peaceful solitude, but we also never experience true and authentic connection with others. We live in between, experiencing the trials of both worlds, yet at the same time experiencing the benefits of neither. We feel lonely yet overwhelmed, disconnected and frazzled, but we are not alone enough to be nurtured by God,or connected enough in relationship to nurture one another.

BTW- George and Joy's Wedding Rawked- Wish I could have stayed for the Reception. So much Cool stuff happining that it can be quite overwhelming.

For awhile our church has had worship services in the open air at the Park of Roses, but at the start of September we went public with our first worship service at Crestview Middle School. I really feel like God has been with us on this venture. The first Sunday it seemed as though everything came together perfectly. Our welcome team set the place up and helped to make all comers feel welcome. The Tech team did a phenominal job setting up the sound and projection. THe worship team did a great job leading us in worhsip, and the children's ministry team made sure the kids had a blast. I really enjoyed preaching on the geneology of Christ- What kind of people does God use to bring about his kingdom. Perhaps I'll post an MP3 of it sometime.

I was completely surprised by the impact of merely having a public worship service on the surrounding community. We have had several visitors who have come merely because the signs. Talked to one gentleman who lives across from the school who was very excited to check things out. People can actually experience God and his community, and that experience is often initiated by a regular public worship service. Whaddaya know! :)

In Ephasus Paul met at the School of Tyrannus, so we kinda got a precedent for renting out a school. :)

The next week the Janitor didn't show so we had to call and only were able to gain entry 15 minutes befor the service started. That week we were able to dedicate Kate Gallaugher, which was cool, but the service was not as smooth as the next.

We now have 5 community groups: One co-ed on Crestview, a women's group elsewhere on Crestview, another co-ed group on Granden, another on Longview, and a men's group starting next week.

With this church plant it truly is an "all hands on deck" situation. Everyone has a job and they are doing their job's in a superb fashion.

It has been an exciting time- most exciting is to see an increase in people's passionate pursuit of Christ.

more to come later today ( I hope)

Praying with My Kids!

1- A couple of nights I was praying with Ian while putting him to bed. Ian is the type of guy who hits the pillow and is sound asleep, yet he always manages to pray even as he is drifting. One of my favorite things in the world is to listen to my kids pray. Their earnestness and insight astounds me. You really get to glimpse the heart of a child when you hear them pray. Here is what Ian prayed the other night:

"Jesus, thank you so much for Mommy, thank you for having Mommy make such good food for me and thank you for making Mommy so much fun. Please protect her and keep her safe. And thank you for Daddy and for making him so smart. He's not smart about everything, but thank you for making him smart to know all about transformers and superheroes, and how to make scary faces. Thank you so much Jesus, Amen."

At that point he completely fell asleep, and I wondered o myself why he needed to add the qualifier about me not being smart about everything, he's not supposed to know that yet.

2- I have been painting the exterior of the house with every spare moment I have (which is not saying much) In the process I really did a number on my brain cells with the oil based primer-- ouch- bad trip. I also pulled some muscles in my neck, and thus was in some excruciating pain. Wednsday was a complete waste because I could barely think because the pain. Thursday morning I awoke and the pain was worse. I was downstairs taking care of some e-mails and kathleen prances into my office and askes if she can pray for my neck. She climbs up on the couch behind my chair, puts her little hands on my neck and starts asking Jesus to send the power and presence of God to make Daddy's neck better. She prayed stuff along that line for a couple of minutes and by the end of the prayer 95% of the pain was gone and I was able to go into work. Pretty cool eh!

Thank you Jesus for my Kids-

new blog to quickly for an update on what is going down with Central Vineyard!

WE GOT ONE!

"We Got One!"

--Janine, the receptionist, from the film Ghostbusters upon receiving their first customer.

For the past several months we hav been praying that Carson Dellesky, Jamie and Teddy's baby, would be healed. He had some kind of intestinal hernia that required surgery. We have prayed for this little guys many times and Jamie had recently had a feeling that they should get him scanned again to see if the hernia went away. Most Dr.s would see this as a waste of time, but our friend Dr. Ali Carine trusted mom's instinct (Ali rocks) and ordered another scan that revealed that Carson was healed. Rich Nathan and several other pastors prayed for Adrienne and I at all three of the weekend services at VCC. Joanne Kay planned a real nice reception for us following each of the services where we were able to connect with lotsa friends and well wishers. Thanks a million Joanne.

So now Central Vineyard has officially started. Next wednsday our second home group starts meeting, and our first women's group is in the process of starting. I'm still bustin my hynee trying to get all of our ducks in order, but we are making definite progress. Today I got together with Gary Wolfe and JMC and we were able to pray for every single person who is ocming with us in this endeavor. Good time.

I am so grateful for the growth, fun, and challanges of the last 5 years as a staff member at VCC. I'm so glad that it is not necessary for us to start from scratch in figuring out this church stuff. I'm sure that our little congregation will have it's own flavor, but we are not seeking to reinvent the wheel.

Our home group meetings have been great. There is a certain electricity in the air when you see people connecting with each-other, and with God. This family of people is so willing to inconvenience themselves for each-other. There have already been profound opportunities for people to BE the Body of Christ.

---------------------------
reading-The New Testament and the People of God-NT Wright, scooter bbs's, Matthew Commentaries, and many childrens's books to my kids.
listening- Rocket to Russia- The Ramones, Fever & Smoke- The Three Suns, And a dance mix I put together with my kids.
riding- Twist n Go Venice (Made in China, out of Plastic, so there!)

What a sad place we live in sometimes.

So many broken hearts are to be found. Apparently he is up for a 5th degree felonee, which will probably only result in probabtion, meaning Don can move on once again to find young men to prey on, on the internet, at a church, etc. Pray that his family don't help conceal Don's past of child exploitation. Check the links bar to find out about Don. We should all show up at the sentencing to pressure the Judge.

Marriage Madness

Dave & Kara's Wedding last night- what a blast.
I have felt like complete garbage this week, that sinus funk hath got me good.
But thanks to rest and DayQuil, I was able to perform the wedding, and it charged me. Dave and Kara completely adored each-other is such an apparant way. These guys were completely radiant. The party was amazing as well. The place was populated by lotsa friends and family, and a ton o people from the soon to be launched Central Vineyard Church. After the Bride and Groom left for there first night (bow chuka wow wow), Jimmy Zartman cranked up the tunes and we had the most fun dance/clean up the reception time I've ever expereinced. Most of the people were from our home group. According to the custodial staff, this was the fastest wedding clean up ever. Many hands=light burden. I LOVE these guys.

Lately I have been confronted aney of the delicacy of marital relationships, so I have been asking God to amp up my love for Adrienne. I feel like He has been helping us to have more love for each-other. THose who new me BA (before Adrienne) would remember what a hopeless/cynical romantic I was. One of my then (and now) favorite bands was/is XTC. On their Oranges and Lemons album they have a song entitled Cynical Days. I remember putting it on a mix tape (remember those) for Adrienne. THis song was kinda like a prayer of sorts for me. I desperately lonely, going through a multi-year struggle with depression. Over the past 7/8 years my cynicism has wained and my hope has sky-rocketed. I attribute that to Adrienne's vitality and hope (she's sexy too), as well as her steadfast encouragment to get my eyes of my navel and onto God.

Cynical Days
by Andy Partridge (XTC)

Another year's gone by,
The world's grown older,
Sometimes I heave a sigh,
People grow colder.

Every day I do my best to show,
I can make it in this world I know,
But all the bad thoughts that people bring,
My faith in human nature's
Getting pretty thin.

Help me get through these cynical days.
Help me get through my cynical ways.
You say it's just a passing phase,
You've got to help me get through, these cynical days.

Another see through scheme,
People are shallow.
The dark night's closing in,
My dark thoughts follow.

I try and make my world a better place,
(my efforts seem in vain),
But I'm competing in a human race,
(falling deeper down the drain),
That value things that just don't count,
Makes me wonder what it's all about.

Help me get through these cynical days.
Help me get through my cynical ways.
You say it's just a passing phase,
You've got to help me get through these cynical days.

Yeah, you say it's just a passing phase,
You've got to help me get through these cynical days.

Yeah, you say it's just a passing phase,
You've got to help me get through these cynical days.

Yeah, you say it's just a passing phase,
You've got to help me get through these cynical days.

Cynical days.
Cynical days.

GK Chesterton from Universalis today:

On this day in 1936 died G.K. Chesterton, writer and journalist. His writings – stories, essays, poems, books, journalism – are infused with an unequalled joy and love of truth.
In youth, he went through a crisis of nihilistic pessimism and it was his recovery from this that led him to God and ultimately to conversion. “The Devil made me a Catholic”, he said – meaning that it was the experience of evil and nothingness that convinced him of the goodness and sanity of the world and his creator. His poem “The Ballade of a Suicide” celebrates the salvific value of ordinary things; his novel, “The Man who was Thursday”, narrates the fight for sanity in an insane world and ponders the paradox of God; and “Orthodoxy”, written long before he became a Catholic, highlights orthodoxy not as a dead and static thing but as the only possible point of equilibrium between crazy heresies any one of which would drive us mad.
He took part in all the major controversies of his age, and was a lifelong adversary and friend of socialists and atheists such as George Bernard Shaw. These controversies were conducted with passion but with unfailing charity: he never sought to defeat his opponents, only to defeat their ideas. He would never cheat to score a point: and his love for the people he fought against is something that all controversialists should imitate, however hard it may be.

I'm back!

Had a great flight back! I took a Bonine pill every day of the trip to avoid get motion sickness, and it worked! It can make you a little drowsy, but copious amounts of tea did much to counteract the effects.

I double dosed on the bonine for the flight. During the flight I read "The Crisis of Islam" by Bernard Lewis . It really helped me to have a clearer perspective on the relations between the US and the middle east. It was about a 4 hour read for me, I strongly recommend it.

For those who care:

This morning I woke up at 6:30 due to jet lag: (I woke up at 11:30am many days of this vacation, so sue me) Perhaps I'll continue this schedule. Oftentimes, not daily as of yet, I begin the day praying through the Psalms using the Universalis Web-site. I use the web-site because it is a lot less complicated than flipping through a prayer book, though I sometimes us the Anglican Book of Common Prayer (1928 version being my preference) the Universalis web-site is very handy but I am not converting to Roman Catholicism. I do think Evangelicals really throw the baby out with the bathwater when they reject praying through scripture, or any prayer written by another believer. I think I'm a pretty spontaneous guy, but early in the morning, after work, or late at night are times where my brain is so tired or cluttered that it helps to have arranged scripture to help jump-start my mind. The very reading aloud of scripture is an act of worship. What I really enjoy about praying through a prayer book is knowing that around the world I am joining with believers from many different traditions of Christendom in prayer and worship. I find I am a better husband and dad in the morning when I start out his way. I also have an easier time praying throughout the day when I pause in these ways. Check it out: Morning Prayer (this is better than Ritalin!)

After I pray I like to go into reading scripture, sometimes aloud. Today I read 2 Peter on the Bible gateway web-site. At your fingertips you can do your reading in any version you prefer, And Safari Browser users (only for Mac Cultists) can easily adjust print size, which beats straining your eyes. At the close of my Bible reading my tea or coffee is ready.

I don't think this is necessarily for everyone, but it has been working for me.

I'm still on vacation today, hanging with the kids. I've got lotsa personal business to attend to, but I hope to take Ian to Galyons to do the climbing wall (playing Spider-Man) and assembling a Cinderella Puppet theater with Kathleen.

UK tour winding up

The last couple of days consisted of lotsa rest and some short trips. Sometimes I feel like people will line up around the block for a chance to criticize the Church and redundantly point out her shortcomings, but it would be nice to see some communal advocacy for Christ's Bride. Even before Paul would would deliver some of his most severe criticism towards particular bodies of believers, he would articulate what he was thankful to God for in the particular body of believers he was corresponding with.

I would like to see all readers of this blog who find some affinity for Jesus to write a list of 5 or 10 ways you have encountered Christ through His church.
