posting to post

Many years ago I mocked gardening because I thought there were more "spiritually significant" things I could do. "It's all going to burn someday" rhetoric.

Back in the day I thought hurry was the only context to express zeal.

Seems I forgot that it all started in a Garden and will end in a city- So it seems like urban Gardening puts me in a good context to meditate on the storyline.

Have an old 1969 stereo system on the porch with my i-pod jacked in. One of the speakers is thrashed- so I've been playing strictly mono lo-fi music. Phil Spectre, Pet Sounds, and the first 4 Beatles Capital Releases.

reading: "Simply Christian" By NT Wright
"A Stranger Came Ashore" by Molly Hunter

--notable songs--
Larry Norman- "The Outlaw" moved me to tears today
Mike Stand's first Solo Album
a little Black Sabbath

Maybe I'll start Blogging again

So I'm hanging on the porch with my son Ian. He enthusiastically starts telling me about all the different kinds of spies in the world, spy kids, secret service, etc.

I asked him if he remembered the BIble story about the spies (Joshua 2). Ian replied,

"Dad, those are not the kind of spies I'm talking about, they don't have special gadgets, they're more like ninjas who sneak around withn no technology!!"

I'm so thankful for a son who can find a way to integrate Ninja's into the Bible!

Tragic News-- Please Pray

Friends, Nikki Pappas forwarded this to me yesterday. Martha Berg's (Smith) husband Phil died this week. Martha was a dear friend of mine in College, as well as a friend of Nikki Pappas (they were roommates). Phil and Martha worked for the Peacemaking initiative caled Shevet Achim Shevet Achim.

Please Pray for Martha and her Children as they navigate this horrible tragedy.

Here is what Nikki Sent Me:

Dear Family and Friends,

My husband Philip died suddenly in our home in Jerusalem, Israel on Monday, January 16, 2006 at 6:30 a.m. You are invited to join us for his burial this Sunday, January 22 at 12:30 p.m. at the CMA cemetery, located at the intersection of Emek Refaim and Rachel Imeinu Streets in the German Colony in Jerusalem. Following the burial, please come to a kosher (meat) reception in celebration of Philip's life, at Beit Shmuel-Mercaz Shimshon on 6 Eliyahu Shma' St. The one-way, horseshoe shaped street is between the King David and David's Citadel Hotels.

Back to Blogging!!

Lukas Steven Gerald Jackson is my new Nephew born to Elizabeth and Jeff Jackson! He is the cutest. He was born on Jan. 4. I was able to take part of an important rite of passage along with Jeff J. When I visited in the hospital. I don't know what it is- but these guys produce the sweetest most endeering handsome babies! Mothering has really brought an amazing dimension to Elizabeth. She is so good at it! When you get to know Owen and Lukas you will see what I mean!

Also- on a much lighter note-- I got to see U2 in Cleveland with Uncle Chet and cousen Jordan. Words won't do justice.

And Nancy Kohn tagged me, so hear it goes:

my five guilty pleasures
(not exhaustive)

1) Comic Books-- My FAVORITE for of entertainment. I have been reading/collecting since 1978, and currently have over 10,000 issues in my basement. (favorites, Spider-Man, Justice Soiciety, Flash, anything SIlver Age)

2) Doctor Who- The a cult BBC sci-fi series that has aired since the day Kennedy was shot and CS lewis died. I was part of a fan club in the 80's- went to DR. Who Conventions (thanks Dad) and had a 20 foot long scarf knitted by my Mom (just like TOm Baker, the fourth actor to portray the Doctor) The current series produced by Russell Davies is genius!

3) Bathing: I love loong scalding baths in my clawfoot with smelly bath salts. Somedays I take two baths!

4) Karaoke: I do a great George Michael as well as Eminem, with a bit of A-Ha as well.

5) I am a Brian WIlson/Beach Boys fanatic. I have copies of every recording session and rehearsal during their time at Capital. As well all the smile fragments. My dad started me on this!

The Cry of A Tiny Babe

There are others who know about this miracle birth
The humblest of people catch a glimpse of their worth
For it isn't to the palace that the Christ child comes
But to shepherds and street people, hookers and bums
And the message is clear if you've got ears to hear
That forgiveness is given for your guilt and your fear
It's a Christmas gift you don't have to buy
There's a future shining in a baby's eyes

Like a stone on the surface of a still river
Driving the ripples on forever
Redemption rips through the surface of time
In the cry of a tiny babe
